  • Dive Club @ Stoney Cove Facebook Code of Conduct / Etiquette

    Background: Social media has blurred the lines between people’s private and public time and space. It is important to understand that the impact of a person’s social media presence can have repercussions in both their personal and professional lives. The following code of conduct was written in response to comments that fell outside of the committee’s expectations of acceptable behaviour on the Facebook group, and is intended to make those expectations clear.

    Whilst this code of conduct is focused around Facebook, many of the items can provide guidance for any dealings with other members of the club through whatever medium.

    The Dive Club @ Stoney Cove does not discriminate against any views but we reserve the right to edit or remove any comments that:

    • Discriminate against, or are in any way defamatory of, any person, group or class of persons, race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age. racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, life-threatening or discriminatory in any way;
    • Are in any way obscene, deliberately offensive, hateful or otherwise inflammatory;
    • Are intended or otherwise likely to threaten, harass, annoy, alarm, inconvenience, upset or embarrass another person (including personal attacks and/or defamatory statements);
    • Are intended or otherwise likely to infringe (or threaten to infringe) another person’s right to privacy;
    • Are serious, unproven, unsupported, or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations;
    • Are abusive, aggressive, coarse, explicit, vulgar, violent, obscene, or pornographic;
    • Encourage or suggest illegal activity;
    • Are unintelligible or irrelevant;
    • Or any other message that the forum moderators feel is not in the spirit of this protocol.

    Users may also be reported to Facebook if they do not comply with Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.
    As you can imagine, striking the right balance is a tough job that we approach by focusing on a few key principles:

    • Keeping you safe. We have zero tolerance for any behaviour that puts people in danger, whether someone is organising or advocating real-world violence or bullying other people. Requiring people to use their authentic identity on Facebook helps to motivate all of us to act responsibly, as our names and reputations are visibly linked to our words and actions.
    • Encouraging respectful behaviour. We ask people to consider their audience when sharing something that may offend others.

    Our goal is to create an environment where we don’t need a lot of rules, and people on Facebook feel motivated and empowered to treat each other with empathy and respect.
    We don’t tolerate bullying or harassment. We allow you to speak freely on matters and people of public interest, but remove content that appears to purposefully target private individuals with the intention of degrading or shaming them. This content includes, but is not limited to:

    • Pages that identify and shame private individuals;
    • Images altered to degrade private individuals;
    • Photos or videos of physical bullying posted to shame the victim;
    • Sharing personal information to blackmail or harass people and;
    • Repeatedly targeting other people with unwanted friend requests or messages.

    We define private individuals as people who have neither gained news attention nor the interest of the public, by way of their actions or public profession.

    Guidance regarding Public vs. Private
    Despite the existence of privacy options, many items published in social media are publicly accessible and it can be difficult to guarantee that sites are fully private. As such, always start with the assumption that anything you say can be read by anyone, anywhere, at any time and remember that the internet has a long memory. Always apply the following test: “Would my manager, client or customers be happy to see this content published?”

    The Dive Club’s 21 Facebook friendship recommendations:

    1. Don’t post anything that will hurt someone’s image.
    2. Don’t post anything that will hurt someone’s career.
    3. Don’t post anything that will hurt someone’s relationships.
    4. Use privacy settings to control each friend’s level of access to your profile
    5. Share information with close friends before posting it on Facebook.
    6. Delete or block anyone who posts something that compromises your image.
    7. Apply offline social rules to your Facebook interactions.
    8. Be aware that not everyone is honest while on Facebook.
    9. Use common sense in your Facebook interactions.
    10. Monitor your photos to make sure they are flattering.
    11. Always present yourself positively but honestly on Facebook.
    12. Respect your friends’ time by not posting excess information on Facebook.
    13. Only write on a friend’s wall if you are actually friends with them offline.
    14. Only send a friend a private message if you are actually friends with them offline.
    15. Only comment on a friend’s photos if you are actually friends with them offline.
    16. Only use Facebook chat with people you are actually friends with them offline.
    17. Always realise that Facebook can expose lies you have told people.
    18. Remember information a friend posts about you can have real world consequences.
    19. If a friend deletes or untags themselves from a photo or post, do not repost it.
    20. Do not say anything disrespectful about someone on Facebook.
    21. Do not post information on Facebook that could be used against you.

    Should you be considered as contravening these protocols, The Dive Club administrators reserve the right to remove the ‘offending’ post(s). The person posting unacceptable posts will be advised that this is not acceptable, and that any further instances may result in us taking one or more of the following actions:

    • Suspend, whether temporarily or permanently, your Account and/or your right to access our group;
    • Issue you with a written warning;
    • Disclose such information to law enforcement authorities as required or as we deem reasonably necessary;
    • Terminate your membership (if this happens, you will not be entitled to a refund on your membership fees).
